The subject of long range e-bikes is one that animates the enthusiast. Fast becoming a thing of the past, range anxiety is to be further consigned to the back of minds as Bosch has introduced a PowerPack 800 product that can be paired up for a stunning 300km theoretical range.

Hot on the heels of updates to its smart system software, the battery announcement upgrades the top-end of the manufacturer’s battery family to deliver 800Wh cells, which can be specced in a pair. The idea, so says Bosch, is to give ammo to long distance cyclists who want to explore further into the backcountry with peace of mind, as well as simultaneously equipping electric cargo bike users with more juice in the tank to extend their delivery or load haulage capability.

What’s particularly impressive with the Bosch PowerPack 800 setup is that the new top-end cells fit into the same dimensions of the prior top-spec battery, a 725Wh cell. This means the PowerPack product will have a 200Wh/kg energy density for its 3.9kg total for a DualBattery setup. As a result, manufacturers should be able to offer comfortably improved range estimates on future models, all the while maintaining sleek design credentials.

With a total of 1,600Wh on deck the 300km range is among the highest you’ll find at present, though advances in battery technology are now promising greater leaps between generations of products. The range estimate is of course theoretical, your actual range will hinge on a variety of factors ranging rider and load weight, the terrain you’re covering and even temperature with colder conditions generally lowering the output. Combatting this, some manufacturers are now introducing insulative battery cases for those expecting to ride in sub zero conditions.
