Espen Digernes Acquires Cake
CEO Espen Digernes secures the acquisition of Cake, a renowned but bankrupt Swedish e-motorbike manufacturer.
Espen Digernes, CEO of Brages Bilforretning AS, a car dealership based in Ålesund, Norway, has made a noteworthy move in the realm of electric transportation. Recent reports from Swedish newspaper Breakit reveal that Digernes has successfully acquired Cake, a prominent Swedish e-motorbike manufacturer that had previously faced financial woes, filing for bankruptcy earlier this year.
Cake, established in 2017, is recognized for its innovative designs in high-performance electric motorcycles tailored for both on and off-road adventures. Despite encountering challenges, including a recent bankruptcy filing and a shifting economic landscape, Cake has made significant strides, having garnered substantial funding and boasting a sales record of approximately 6000 bikes.
The acquisition by Digernes signifies a potential turning point for Cake and the electric mobility sector at large. However, amidst this transition, questions loom regarding the fate of former Cake employees awaiting compensation and the status of Cake's operations beyond Swedish borders. Reports suggest that the purchase does not encompass shares in subsidiaries or assets located in Taiwan, raising further inquiries about the broader implications of this transaction.
In a separate development, eMoto, a Florida-based shop, has stepped in to acquire a substantial portion of Cake's remaining inventory in the United States. This acquisition not only secures access to Cake's acclaimed Makka and Osa bikes but also includes essential parts for servicing and supporting Cake products, ensuring continued customer satisfaction.
Nevertheless, uncertainties persist regarding the ownership of Cake's intellectual property, as indicated by statements from bankruptcy administrators. Despite rumored interest from various potential buyers, including Gowow, negotiations have yet to yield a definitive outcome.
As stakeholders await further clarity on the ramifications of Digernes' acquisition, one thing remains certain: the resilience of Cake and its community of enthusiasts, who eagerly anticipate the company's next chapter in the evolving landscape of electric mobility.
